Cegah Potensi Monopoli Sektor Hilir Gas

In a seminar titled “Opening Access for National Industrial Sustainability and Competitiveness of Domestic Products,” held at the Ministry of Industry, Wednesday (13/3), steps to prevent monopoly in the downstream gas sector were discussed.

Bobby A. Rizaldi, member of Commission VII of the House of Representatives, asserted that the Government must oblige new business entities to have the necessary capital and assets if they wish to participate in the downstream gas sector.

He explained that this will create competitiveness in the downstream gas industry and will prevent monopoly within the sector.

“It will be great if the current market conditions are competitive,” he stated to hukumonline.

During the same event, Tresna P. Soemardi, member of the Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU), agreed that the potential for monopolistic competition exists in the downstream gas industry.

Tresna explained that currently, there are no specific regulations that aim to prevent monopolistic practices in the downstream gas sector, which means that monopoly prevention must follow general provisions under Law No. 5 of 1999 on Prohibitions of Monopolistic Practices and Unfair Business Competitions.

He further stated that in order to minimize monopolistic practices in the downstream gas sector, the use of essential facilities, such as gas transmission pipes, must be controlled by the Government.

This will prevent dominant businesses from controlling important facilities and from monopolizing the downstream gas industry, Tresna concluded.
